THE WORLD SCENARIO 2016 was a year of extraordinary growth in global internet usage , with a strong increase in almost all indicators compared to 2015. 3.77 billion internet users in 2017 , with a penetration of 50% of the world population; 2.80 billion social media users in 2017 , with a penetration of 37%; 4.92 billion mobile users in 2017 , with a penetration of 66%; 2.56 billion mobile social media users in 2017 , with a penetration of 34%; 1.61 billion e-commerce users in 2017 , with a penetration of 22%. The rapidity of the growth of these, and other, indicators was also one of the central elements in last year's report, but, considering that today internet penetration has exceeded 50%.
It was reasonable to expect a slowdown in this trend, instead exactly the opposite happened: internet use grew by 10% compared to 2016, +354 million compared to 2015; active users on social media increased by 21% , 482 million compared to 2015; unique mobile Mobile Phone Number users grew by 5% , +222 million in the last 12 months; Mobile social media users grew by 30% , +581 million in 2016. More than 2.8 billion , and +91% of them do so using mobile devices: Facebook continues to grow, and this is a very interesting figure, given that, for 10 years now, it has by far the most used platform (if we consider its entire ecosystem, which includes Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger, the audience is made up of 4.37 billion people ).
Another interesting data concerns the time spent on social channels: GlobalWebIndex highlights how the average user spends an average of 2 hours and 19 minutes using social platforms every day . The numbers regarding social media are impressive, but they are even more so if linked to access to these channels from mobile devices: more than a third of the world population accesses social platforms from mobile (2.5 billion people, +581 million compared 12 months ago). About 8% of the world's population started using mobile devices during 2016: this means a new user every 18 seconds (just to give you an idea, while you were reading this sentence, 100 people started using a mobile device to access to social channels).
